Republished in paperback by E. Hobbs, 1988. This is a new book; a republication of the original 1904 edition.

If you are interested in reproducing the 'original look' of turn-of-the-century furniture commonly found in antique stores today, this book is for you! I think it is a real treasure.

Originally copyrighted and published in 1904, this book is a compilation of articles from The Western Painter magazine, published from 1898 to 1899. It includes tools and materials employed, preparation of surfaces, stains, stain formulas and staining, fillers, shellacing, varnishes, rubbing, French polishing, wax polishing, oil polishing, etc. etc. In other words, these are the actual articles written and read by the contemporary finishers of the pre-World War I era, including Grand Rapids furniture, mission oaks and 'Sears Oaks.'

This is the bible of finishing techniques for that time. A must-have for the serious furniture restorer or refinisher - or for anyone interested in the finishing materials and techniques of that time.

The original book was reprinted by Ed Hobbs in the 1980's. In 1994, we purchased the entire remaining print inventory and publishing rights from Mr. Hobbs through our publishing company, Red Rose Press, Inc. We have made copies available only to our students and workshop attendees since then. Now, we are making this book available again to the general public. We think you will enjoy stepping back in time as you spend an evening reading the wood finisher's 'how-to's' of the day - as they were written in 1904.
